HomeSounds first began working with Wheatfen in 2019 when it installed a live-streaming microphone among the reeds, broads and woodland of this beautiful nature reserve, deep in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. This microphone broadcast for a year and half, before and throughout the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic.
HomeSounds has delivered public soundwalks at the reserve, both in-person and online, that explore themes of creativity, education health and wellbeing.
In his teaching capacity at the University of East Anglia, HomeSounds director Martin Scaiff regularly brings students studying environmental education and outdoor learning to Wheatfen to experience the reserve, learn about their educational approaches, visit Wheatfen Forest School and speak with the school's founder and director Rose Hoare.
In 2024 HomeSounds created a series of sound installations for the first Wheatfen Hidden Sounds event. Listening stations were established on a walking route around the reserve. These stations shared sound from above and below ground, underwater, natural and man-made materials, close up and far away. The second iteration of this event will take place in summer 2025.
In this section you will find a range of media material drawing from HomeSounds' work at Wheatfen.
