Alice Angus - response to live stream soundwalk
Active Environmental Listening can be a profound experience. Taking time to walk, think, feel, and activate your senses offers the opportunity to draw from an easily overlooked well-spring of inspiration.
It can be argued that natural sound, and ever-increasingly human-generated environmental sound and noise, are instinctive sources of human creativity that play a fundamental role in our creative endeavours.
If you are lucky enough, your ears are always 'on'. This means you will hear the sounds of your acoustic habitats whether you wish to or not. You will also be contributing to these habitats, consciously or not. Sound-Walks give us the time and space to reflect on this circular flow of sound and consider how our lives, and our creativity, are shaped by it.
Listening, particularly as part of contemplation more generally, is long-established as a key practice in creative activity. This is not confined to the traditional creative arts, where listening practices are extensively used in music, art, theatre, writing etc, but in all areas of life where inspiration is sought. No doubt Archimedes was sitting quietly and hearing in the bath before his Eureka moment!
Listening offers both direct active inspiration from the acoustic habitats around us, as well as providing a space where the imagination can roam freely.
HomeSounds leads workshops with young children, adults, experienced artists and many others where the focus is on fostering creativity.
HomeSounds works in collaboration with artists, teachers and many others to both explore and provide inspirational acoustic habitats where creativity can thrive.
